I’ve wanted a lab ever since I was little. I finally ended up getting one for my 18th birthday and could not have been happier. I had big plans for Kimber and couldn’t wait to have her trained and get her in the woods with me. When she was about 4 months old I was talking to my cousin, who actually found the litter she came out of for me, and he had a trainer he was using named Stan Brown. I took her out to his house a few times before it was actually time to get her trained and worked with some simple commands like “sit”, and “here”. I was told to wait until she was 6 months old to start her actual training because that is when they lose their baby teeth and get their adult teeth. When she was about 5 months old Stan had decided he was not going to train anymore. This kind of threw a wrench in the spokes for me, considering I only had a month left until she needed to start. I got with my cousin and he knew about a guy just down the road named Larry Wade. I didn’t know it yet but it was a God send that I ended up with Larry as a Trainer and here’s why. I dropped Kimber off with Larry and the way he treated her was unreal. Kimber is more like my child than she is my dog so I wanted her to be treated like she was when she was with me. When I dropped her off he told me that he wanted me to stay away for 2 weeks so the two of them could grow a bond and then after that I could come as often as I wanted. The two weeks were really hard for me but worth it. Kimber trained with Larry for 5 months and in those 5 months not only did he train Kimber but he trained me how to be a handler as well. Larry called me one day and said that Kimber was a very nice dog and that we needed to take it further than just a duck dog. He entered her in a few hunt tests and eventually she got her HRCH (Hunter Retriever Champion) title. I have never had a lab so I take a lot of pride in her title. Larry is not just a dog trainer, he is a dog lover and that is a huge thing to me because a lot of dog trainers have the football coach mentality. Not saying that they don’t know how to train dogs but Larry’s way is much more affective. I will have many more labs in my life and I will continue to use Larry as a trainer and I highly recommend that you do too.
